CONSERVATION AT SKÁLANES

Conservation work at Skálanes takes place within a landscape shaped by ongoing ecological processes and long histories of human use. The reserve is thus not treated as a static system to be preserved nor restored to a fixed state. Instead, it is approached as a dynamic environment where environmental change, species movement and land use interact continuously.

Research and conservation therefore develop together. Habitat restoration, wetland management and vegetation monitoring are carried out alongside academic research projects and student fieldwork. These activities allow conservation actions to be observed and evaluated within the landscape itself.

The philosophical foundation of this work is expressed in the Skálanes Conservation Manifesto, developed as part of long term research and reflection on conservation practice at the site.

The Skálanes Conservation Manifesto

Acknowledging irreversible change: Recognizing the irrevocable changes introduced to ecosystems by human activities and climate change. Conservation efforts must focus on enhancing contemporary ecological processes, energy flow, and biomass within the existing landscape.

Adaptive management: Applying an approach based on adaptive management, which involves ongoing problem-solving and learning by doing. Prioritizing practical and applied solutions over theoretical debates based on the belief that the value of empirical evidence and objective analysis should not be overshadowed by each other.

Rejecting the concept of a pristine nature: Challenge the notion of nature as separate from human influence. Human values are inherently intertwined with conservation management, and these values should be openly acknowledged and considered in decision-making processes.

Interdisciplinary perspective: Advocate for a holistic view of conservation that recognizes the interplay between ecological, philosophical, economical, and societal elements. This perspective is crucial for addressing the complexities of the contemporary conservation landscape.

Continuous commitment to effective practices: Emphasize the importance of effective conservation strategies and actions over the mere designation of protected areas. Our manifesto reflects a commitment to ongoing experimental efforts to manage and enhance our natural environments.
